Steps to Identifying Phrases & Clauses
Identify and label the parts of speech. Find and eliminate all prepositional phrases. Identify and label the subject. & the verb/simple predicate. Identify the group of words as phrase or clause *If the group of words contain a subject & a predicate, it is a clause. *If either the subject or predicate is missing, the group of words is a phrase.)

Independent (Marge) Clause
Just like Marge, an independent clause (IC) can survive on its own. It is a complete sentence which expresses a complete thought. A simple sentence is also called an independent clause because it contains one independent clause. It must have at least one subject + one verb/simple predicate.

Examples of Independent Clauses
Bart does not like to go to school. Lisa loves to play the saxophone. Bart and Lisa do not like to go to school. Lisa and Bart love to play the saxophone. Lisa and Bart love school and playing the saxophone.

Independent Clause --- Marge
Marge is an independent woman. She can survive on her own. However, sometimes a simple sentence can have a compound subject, a compound predicate, or both.

Compound Sentences Contains two or more independent clauses.
The clauses are usually joined by a coordinating conjunction (cc). The most common coordinating conjunctions (cc’s) are FANBOYS *For *And *Nor *But *Or *Yet *So

Compound Sentence (IC + , + F.A.N.B.O.Y.S + IC)
For And Nor But Or Yet So Bart hates school, so he makes fun of the teachers.

Example of Compound Sentence
Caution: Do not use a comma every time you use a word that is a coordinating conjunction; only use a comma when the coordinating conjunction is used to combine two or more independent clauses. Example of proper comma use: Bart hates school, so he makes fun of his teachers. Example of improper comma use: Bart hates school, and makes fun of his teachers. Why is the 2nd sentence’s comma use improper?

Your Turn to Practice Below are ten compound sentences. In each, identify the conjunction joining the two independent clauses and then place each independent clause in parentheses. Finally, underline the subject in each independent clause once and underline the verb in each independent clause twice.

10. Tom cleaned the scallops; I wrapped them in bacon.
1. I wanted to watch a movie, but Bill wanted to skateboard. 2. After lunch we walked to Spanish, but Jim skipped the class. 3. I like Gmail, but my best friend uses Yahoo. 4. Lying in the sun for three hours, I got a terrible sunburn, but Marie did not burn at all. 5. I might do my homework tonight, or I may decide to do it in the morning. 6. Use an encyclopedia, or find the information online. (hint: don’t forget that “you” is sometimes the understood subject of a clause) 7. At batting practice I hit an amazing number of pitches, but Mark struck out every time. 8. You can lie on the couch all day, or you can do something productive. 9. I have not read any of the Harry Potter books, nor have I read any of the Twilight series. 10. Tom cleaned the scallops; I wrapped them in bacon.
