1 METU Academic Rules and Regulations for Undergraduate Education

2 METU EPE - English Proficiency Exam: 60 (70 for FLE)
TOEFL: 75 (86 for FLE) IELTS: 6 (7 for FLE)

3 DURATION OF EDUCATION Normal period of study: 4 years Maximum: 7 years (exc. English Prep, and approved leaves) Beyond seven years: Two exam rights, and 3-4 semester registration rights for students with 5 or fewer courses to graduate 16 weeks a semester, 7 weeks summer sch., make-up sessions for holidays

5 Compulsory and elective

6 PREREQUISITES AND COREQUISITES
Prerequisite: taken and passed with at least DD or S Corequisite : taken together with a course Programs may define additional conditions for taking a course

7 Additional load subject to advisor approval:
STUDENT COURSE LOAD Normal Course Load  Programs specify number of credit courses for a semester. Additional load subject to advisor approval: CGPA of , 1 extra CGPA of 2.50 or above, 2 extra No change in load in the first semester Minimum load  3 credit courses

8 ADJUSTMENT/COURSE TRANSFER
Drop-out, transfer or readmitted students  “adjustment” to current curriculum Courses with DC, DD, FD, FF, NA, W, U repeated Courses with CC or above or S require approval of Academic Board.

9 “NOT INCLUDED” Courses not in curriculum can only be taken with NI status. They count towards max. course load. Max. two NI courses in a semester Not included in GPA/CGPA calculations, but grades displayed on transcript

COURSE REGISTRATION Students register in person by visiting advisors First semester courses not postponed Course priority (unless overridden by advisor): Courses that need to be repeated Courses that need to have been taken before All other courses

11 ADD-DROP PERIOD Add-drop period  make changes in registration, confirmed by advisor Students unregistered  petition to advisors  Prog. Coord.  Academic Board Students unregistered  re-register in a future semester

12 WITHDRAWAL After add-drop and within first 10 weeks Advisor approval Max. 1 course a semester, 6 total No withdrawal of first two semester courses No withdrawal for repeated, previously withdrawn, NI or non-credit courses No withdrawal with minimum course load

13 ATTENDANCE Mandatory Instructor - sole authority for rules and implementation

14 COURSE SYLLABUS Must be given to students in beginning of semester and be entered into the course syllabus system ( Include all responsibilities of students (readings, assignments, exams, etc.) and their contribution to letter grade State clearly attendance and other requirements to take the final exam

15 EXAMS At least one midterm and one final exam
Midterm dates announced by RO in first four weeks Final dates are announced by RO before the end of the semester Exams may be given after hours/weekends Instructors and proctors conduct exams Make-ups given with the approval of coord.

16 GRADING (1) Letter grades Instructor - sole authority for rules and implementation Inform students of their progress during the semester. Confidentiality of grades

18 NOT ATTENDING (NA) GRADE
NA given in following cases: Attendance and other course requirements not met to take final exam Not attending midterm & final exams Important: Clearly define conditions for NA in course outline. Students with NA cannot take resit exams.

19 INCOMPLETE (I) GRADE Given to students who could not complete requirements for a valid reason Converted to letter grade within one week after grade submission deadline

20 GRADE CORRECTION Submitted within one week after grade submission deadline Requires approval of Program Coordinator and Head of Academic Board After one week, corrections require Academic Board decision

21 GRADE DEFINITIONS AA, BA, BB, CB, CC, S  passing DC, DD  conditionally passing, not counted in adjustment FF, FD, NA, U  failing grades, must repeat. May replace electives by others DD or above  may repeat in 3 semesters Last grade counts

22 STUDENT PERFORMANCE STATUS
GPA & CGPA at least 2.00, no failing grades that semester  Satisfactory GPA & CGPA at least 2.00, one or more failing grades that semester  Sufficient GPA or CGPA below 2.00  Unsatisfactory S, U, EX, I – not counted in GPA or CGPA

23 PROBATION STATUS CGPA below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters  Probation No new courses or withdrawals Repeat taken courses, priority given to courses with FF, FD, NA, U and courses taken in last 3 semesters with DC or DD Minimum course load rule doesn’t apply.

24 COURSE EVALUATIONS Student evaluate courses online at the end of the semester Close and open-ended questions Results announced to instructors in several weeks after the finals. Instructor Comments on the Course on course improvement and student evaluation Faculty submit for every course taught in their first two years on Campus, optional for others

25 GRADUATION Complete all courses in curriculum with at least DD or S Have a CGPA of at least 2.00 At least half of credits taken from METU

26 Carried out by full time faculty members Duties of advisor:
ADVISORY Carried out by full time faculty members Duties of advisor: Assisting the students in course selection Approving the registered course list Advising and guiding students in academic performance and career development

27 LEAVE OF ABSENCE One or two semesters at a time for financial, family and education reasons Petition to Advisor  Progr. Coord.  Academic Board Application period - end of add-drops No limit to total number of leaves

28 ETHICS CODE (Not in the directive…)
All students are required to obey our ethics code, which involves not resorting to cheating, deception and plagiarism. Students should be informed (course syllabus, introductions) that they must obey METU ethics code during their studies.

29 DEALING WITH CHEATING (Not in the directive…)
Options when ethics codes are breached (cheating, plagiarism, deception, etc.): Give “zero” for exam, project, assignment Give “zero” for part or all of coursework Give failing grade for course Forward case to the discipline committee

30 RULES FOR EXAMS (Not in the directive…)
Instructors define and implement rules for exams. By default, following not allowed, unless instructor decides otherwise: Using a cell-phone or a similar device Using course materials or other resources Communicating with others Leaving exam room (e.g. for the restroom) ** Instructor must always be present in the exam.

31 STUDENT AFFAIRS INFORMATION SYSTEM (SAIS)
Login with username and password Includes different programs for various purposes such as course registration/ approval, course student list, instructor evaluation results, etc. METU Learning Management System - linked to SAIS.

Determine students with attendance, motivation and low performance problems Talk to them in relation to their status and offer help Inform program coordinator about these students to refer to advisors Advisors assess their situation and may refer to Guidance Center
