Picture #4 These are Shia Muslims. They have been persecuted as “infidels.” They are descendants of the Mongolians (Asian decent) because of their slanted eye features—which makes them easy targets for persecution. They are called Hazaras. The character Hassan and his father, Ali are Hazaras.

Picture #6 In Afghanistan, kites are used in a competition where the flyers have to “cut” the kites with the glass powdered rope. The bigger competition is when people “kite run” and go and find the cut kites that have fallen—it is a huge prize to find those kites. From 1996 to 2001, the Taliban government in Afghanistan outlawed kite fighting, and kite flying, by declaring it "un-Islamic".

REQUIREMENTS! 1. You need to have at least five stanzas
2. You need to use poetic devices and techniques that we have learned from our first unit (like tone shift, diction, syntax, paradox, etc.) 3. You must annotate and label them when you turn in your final draft 4. You must include a reflection that explains some of the decisions you made when you wrote your poem.

RUBRIC and WORKshop Read through the rubric so you know the expectations. Wednesday—you need to have a first draft of the poem (I don’t need the reflection or annotations yet). Workshop: you have the rest of today to work on the poem—brainstorm, write, etc.

CLOSING What did you learn today about the Middle East? Everyone share one thing… Homework: Read chapters 1-4, take notes for tomorrow. Apostrophe Hand Poem 1st Draft (reflection isn’t needed yet) due Wednesday.
