This movement is much bigger than just that. Improving health is an all hands on deck activity that will require the integration of not just community development and health but also education, public safety, economic development, community empowerment, etc. (an emphasis here is that “place based approaches” such as community development must better coordinate with “people based approaches” such as education and social support services). Achieving Scale – Program or System Change?
Identify problem Test novel approach to addressing problem Demonstrate local success: best practice in a program, innovative pilot, demonstrable outcomes for narrowly defined geography or population Disseminate approach Replicate approach and expand the number positively impacted Change Systems Diagnose underlying system causes of problem Pursue strategies that impact the policies and practices that impact the systemic barriers Recalibrate based on assessment of progress Adapt to changing context Institutionalize policy and practice changes Source: Exploration of Multi-Site, Cross-sector Initiatives; Pathways to System Change By Mt. Early Take-aways Health is everything; but the approach can’t be everything Start with a strong, motivated, and credible champion Seek early proof-of-concept wins Remember, the goal is affecting change in communities; and so they need to be integrally involved Health investments may not appear too dramatically different, but aspire with a framework of aligning incentives, new funders, and value capture
