The Industrial Revolution
What made this industrial period a revolution?

In the early 1700’s, life in the European countries was slow, quiet and simple. Mostly everyone lived in the country, farmed and made almost everything that they needed themselves.

Everything around them was natural, including power sources
Everything around them was natural, including power sources. The only power sources available were carts pulled by horses, mules or oxen. When one had to seed or harvest crops; they did it themselves, by hand.

Then around the 1750’s, Great Britain started to change
Then around the 1750’s, Great Britain started to change. Unlike political revolutions the Industrial Revolution did not begin with great civil unrest or the clash of armies.

The population grew by three times.
Farming was very closely scrutinized i.e. better soil, better systems of planting and harvesting, and irrigation processes. Many new inventions were beginning to take the place of hand-done craftsmanship.

New Inventions James Watt- The steam engine (1755): able to harness the energy of steam to move machinery. (trains and steamships)

New Inventions Eli Whitney- the Cotton Gin (1793):  a machine designed to remove cotton from its seeds.

New Inventions Elias Howe- Sewing Machine (1819)- clothes no longer had to be sewn by hand

New Inventions Cyrus McCormick- McCormick Reaper (1831): Reduces the amount of work needed to harvest crops and production increases.

For the most part, this change was positive and accepted by the people of the land.

The Industrial Revolution stimulated the growth of Europe and our country.

It allowed factories and industries to flourish.

More efficient farming techniques were now used along with better power sources.

A few of the major negative changes were that the smaller farmers could no longer survive in a world expanding so fast and factories becoming so powerful.

A Change in Labor Workers, including women and children, were now expected and often forced to work hard, long hours in unsafe and unbearable environments.

Child Labor Children worked in dangerous factories, coalmines and other hard labor jobs. Children would start working as young as five years old and sometimes even younger.

Child Labor They had very long working hours, which would start as early as 3 a.m. and they were expected to work hours a day. They were paid very little. Factories wanted children to work because they were cheaper labor then adults.

Child Labor The jobs that were expected of them were often very dangerous and difficult. There were many dangers involved in working in the mine, such as explosions, floods, cave-ins and black lung.

Child Labor Children did not have the opportunity to attend school or even get to play with other children. Would you rather come to school or work in the conditions that these children were working in during the time of the Industrial Revolution?

Good or bad, all changes lead to the change of our world from rural to urban in Europe and America.
