14. What are calendars used for?
 Farmers need it to know when to plant and schedule other activities. In various parts of the world, the calendar tells them when to expect the last frost, and when to expect seasonal rains.
Religions use calendars to schedule holidays.
People use them to mark birthdays and anniversaries
City dwellers use calendars to keep schedules and appointments.

 The Julian formula produced a leap year every four years, which is too many. 
People realized a new calendar was needed

17. Gregorian Calendar In 1582 CE Pope Gregory XIII started a new calendar
To get the calendar back in sync with astronomical events like the vernal equinox or the winter solstice,
a number of days were dropped to fix the accuracy of the calendar.
He began counting years from the birth of Jesus Christ
To solve the problem of losing days he designed the calendar so that only years divisible by 400 would leap
The Gregorian calendar is the formal name for the calendar used today.

18. What’s the Difference
Other calendars, however, are still in use in some parts of the world. These include the Jewish calendar, the Islamic calendar and the Chinese calendar.
They are based on either the annual cycle of the sun, the phases of the moon, or a combination of the two
The Gregorian calendar, for example, is a combination of the annual cycle of the sun (to determine the length of the year) and the cycles of the moon (the word ‘month’ is derived from the word moon).
