When you hear the word Chemistry what do you think of?
Structure, composition and properties Reactions and Energy Atoms and molecules Protons, neutrons and electrons Elements, compounds, and mixtures Acids, bases and salts Chemical Reactions Nuclear reactions Fission and fusion Energy
3
Definition of the word chemistry
A physical science which deals with the structure, composition and properties of matter. It also deals with the changes in which matter undergoes and the energy which accompanies these changes.
4
Chemistry Physical Science: Any science which deals with the physical universe. For example: chemistry, physics and earth science Science: Branch of study which attempts to find a logical explanation for all that is observed.
5
Pure Science: key is discovery and explanation
Applied Science: practical application of scientific discoveries (technology) Pure Science: key is discovery and explanation
6
Matter: anything which takes up space and has mass.
CHEMISTRY Matter: anything which takes up space and has mass. Inertia: tendency of matter to remain at rest if it is resting or to remain in motion if it is moving.
7
Mass: amount of matter you have on hand (Metric unit: gram)
Inertia Volume: amount of space an object occupies. (Metric unit: liter) Mass: amount of matter you have on hand (Metric unit: gram) Note: mass does not equal weight (force of gravity pulling on an object)
8
Energy: ability to do work Force applied over a distance
Exothermic: heat is released. Chemistry Endothermic: heat is absorbed
