2 Grenada A small Caribbean island. Under UK rule.
Eric Gairy revolted, and gained independence from UK in 1974. The country changed hands several more times. Ended up under military rule in 1983.

3 Reasons for Invasion Strong Soviet and Cuban influence in the new regime. America was asked to intervene by the OAS. America sent military because of heavy instability and American medical students at St. George University

4 The Invasion Oct. 25-Dec 15, 1983 Known as Operation Urgent Fury.
Hit from Barbados. Vice Admiral Joseph Metcalf led the US forces. Lack of organization in attack A total of 7000 US forces were used. The enemy consisted of 1500 Grenadians and 700 Cubans. 19 Americans killed, 25 Cubans, 45 Grenadians, 24 civilians.

5 Reactions Received widespread support in America, because of captured American students. Was criticized heavily by international community. The UN Security Council passed a resolution against the invasion. America vetoed the resolution.

6 Aftermath Grenada held Democratic elections, and lived peacefully afterwards. The day of the invasion is a holiday there. Made America realize organization in their military was flawed. Resulted in the Goldwater-Nichols Act, which restructured the command chain. It increased powers of the Chiefs of Staff, and created the Special Operations Command
