1 Y6 Parents core subjects, assessment and what you can do to help

2 the core subjects: English: reading, writing and SPAG mathematics science

3 The pupils take termly tests in reading and maths, and half-termly tests in SPAG and science. Writing is assessed continually based on the work in pupils’ books. We use these to track pupils’ progress in order to make sure no-one falls behind.

14 Writing The pupil can: write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, selecting language that shows good awareness of the reader in narratives, describe settings, characters and atmosphere integrate dialogue in narratives to convey character and advance the action select vocabulary and grammatical structures that reflect what the writing requires, doing this mostly appropriately- SEE BELOW contracted forms in dialogue passive voice modal verbs to indicate degrees of possibility use a range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs SEE BELOW repetition adverbials of time and place pronouns synonyms ellipsis

15 Writing use verb tenses consistently and correctly throughout their writing use the range of punctuation taught at key stage 2 mostly correctly – SEE BELOW inverted commas in speech colons to introduce lists and semi-colons to separate items in a list semi-colons and colons to mark boundaries between independent clauses bullet points hyphens spell correctly most words from the year 5 / year 6 spelling list, and use a dictionary to check the spelling of uncommon or more ambitious vocabulary maintain legibility in joined handwriting when writing at speed
