1 Reflexive Verbs

2 Reflexive Verbs Reflexive Verbs are used to talk about doing things to yourself. They are conjugated in each tense following the rules of conjugation, but require the reflexive pronouns in front of the verb. (see placement rules)

3 Reflexive Pronouns te (yourself) os se (him/herself) se (themselves)
me (myself) nos (ourselves) te (yourself) os se (him/herself) se (themselves) NOTE: These pronouns will always agree with the subject and verb conjugation.

4 Conjugating Reflexive Verbs
A reflexive verb in the infinitive has a se on the end. Lavarse (yo) Cut off the se. lavar se Pick the correct reflexive pronoun for your subject and put it immediately in front of the verb. yo me lavar

5 Conjugating Reflexive Verbs
Conjugate the verb in the correct tense just like a regular verb. Yo me lavo. I wash myself. Note: Without the reflexive pronoun, there is no “self”. lavarse= to wash oneself, lavar= to wash

acostarse (o-ue) to go to bed afeitarse to shave oneself arreglarse to fix oneself like hair-pelo bañarse to bath oneself cepillarse to brush oneself cortarse to cut (one’s hair) despertarse to wake up desvestirse (e-i) to undress oneself dormirse (o-ue) to fall asleep

ducharse to shower oneself enjuagarse to rinse oneself like mouth-boca fregarse to scrub or wash oneself lavarse to wash oneself levantarse to get or stand up limpiarse to clean oneself llamarse to call oneself maquillarse to put makeup on oneself mirarse to look at oneself

peinarse to comb oneself pintarse to put lipstick on (los labios) ponerse to put on oneself probarse to try on quitarse to take off oneself secarse to dry oneself sentarse to sit down vestirse (e to i) to dress oneself verse to see oneself

10 Reflexive Verbs- feelings

12 Reflexives- motion caerse to fall down echarse to lie down
escaparse to escape irse to go away moverse (o-ue) to move, stir, wiggle mudarse to move (home) perderse (e-ie) to get lost quedarse to stay, remain recostarse (o-ue) to lie down

13 Reflexives- NO Non-Reflexive Form
acordarse (o-ue) (de) to remember aprovecharse (de) to take possession (of) ausentarse to be out, away burlarse de to laugh at, make fun of casarse (con) to get married (to) enamorarse (de) to fall in love (with) enterarse (de) to find out (about) equivocarse to be mistaken, wrong fiarse de to trust

14 Reflexives- NO Non-Reflexive Form
fijarse (en) to notice jactarse de to boast about negarse a (e-ie) to refuse to olvidarse (de) to forget parecerse a to resemble portarse bien/mal to behave well/badly quejarse de to complain about reírse de to laugh at

15 Note: Olvidar is followed by a direct object. Olvidaron el número.
Olvidarse by the preposition de and is used with an IOP. Se olvidaron el número. Se les olvidó el número. (all mean they forgot the number)

16 “To Become” ponerse + adjective: to become adjective and is used with physical or emotional changes hacerse + profession or social status: implies effort by the subject
