2
How does mitochondrial Myopathy work?
Mitochondrial Myopathy occurs when the mitochondria is unable to create enough energy for the body and therefore causes the person to feel lethargic and weak. The Mitochondria is the part of a cell that is in charge of creating energy or ATP from carbohydrates or fatty acids in the food we eat. Because the energy from the mitochondria are highly needed in nearly all the cells in the body, having a deficiency of it can affect tissues and organs as well.
3
What causes Mitochondrial myopathy?
Mutation in genes Inherited from family “Myo” means muscle and “pathos” means disease
5
How It’s diagnosed An Exercise test is performed along with a neurological exam Check for Diabetes or problems in the liver or kidneys An EKG to check for cardiomyopathy MRI to check for brain abnormalities
6
Symptoms Neurological ad Muscular Problems Muscle weakness
Exercise Intolerance Hearing Loss Trouble Balancing Seizures Learning Deficits
7
Treatments Though there is no real treatment or a cure, physical therapy can help with the symptoms along with Vitamin therapies. Change in Diet
8
Main Problems Low Energy Free Radicals Lactic Acidosis
A chain reaction of an odd number of broken bonds within a molecule Lactic Acidosis An increase in in production of lactate
9
Possible syndromes Barth syndrome Kearns-Sayre syndrome Leigh syndrome
Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndromes
10
Questions True or False. Mitochondrial Myopathy has no cure.
