Learning Objectives Traveling from one setting to the next, we will learn about the challenges faced in urban and rural settings within Nicaragua. We will gain first-hand exposure to three different initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges. community center resort hotel & foundation sustainable coffee farm Service-learning projects will help us understand how to identify and execute specific projects that address the needs that we encounter. Preparing mini-case studies will illuminate the challenges faced by social entrepreneurs as they work to provide the infrastructure that facilitates equitable and sustainable economic development.

Student Responsibilities
Case Write-ups: We will prepare three mini cases; one for each of the organizations that we visit. 1/3 of group will take the lead on each case some preparation required interviews and data collection at each stop Service Learning Projects: On each stop, we will complete a specific service project designated by the local trip coordinator. 1/3 of group will take the lead on each service project We will report back (via Skype) to the BBA Social Enterprise class.

Stop # 1: Comunidad Connect
Mission: Bring together investors, tourists, the local government, and local residents to foster sustainable development, leadership, and civic engagement through education and collaboration Project: Help with municipal recycling project

Stop # 2: Fundación A. Jean Brugger
Mission: Identify, improve, and expand educational opportunities in partnership with the community of San Juan del Sur Project: School makeover (painting school rooms; installing 6 white boards with stands; donation of school supplies; landscaping)

Stop # 3: Sustainable Coffee Farm
Mission: To care for and improve our environment, community, and business in a manner that is sustainable ecologically, socially, and economically Project: Build eco-stoves for local families

2. 1. 3. “Regarding bars in San Juan del Sur, there are plenty. Hotel Piedras y Olas has a great bar with Happy Hours three times a week. There are also great watering holes right on the water. Bambu is a favorite, along with Coquito's for live music and open mic nights, and the disco is always fun on Saturday nights. Iguana bar is the big favorite for travellers and the place to party on Thursday through Saturday. Tsunami is a very chill reggae bar.” “At the farm, … we also have some horses, fishing, walking trails, relaxing, etc. We can stock our own bar at the farm (not included in the budget, but a good bottle of rum only costs $7)” 5. 4.

Making it Real & Memorable
Trip was designed by Jon Thompson, a social entrepreneur involved in all three enterprises (also Kore B.’s brother) Face-to-face interviews with founders, managers and other important stakeholders In San Juan del Sur, we will sleep and eat with local families in “homestay” accomodation. At the coffee farm, we will stay in their eco-lodge.

Total cost ~$2,300: land cost ~$1,600/person airfare ~$500 other expenses (spending and insurance) ~$200 Cancellation policy / payment dates: TBD Spouses or friends are welcome (at the same price) must take part in our service projects
