Team Awards (And Consequences…)
2
DAILY AWARDS Every day, students have the opportunity to earn COURAGE cards. These can be used to purchase treats and privileges in the School Store during lunch. These can also be entered into a monthly drawing. COURAGE cards expire each month, so students need to use them quickly!
3
WEEKLY AWARDS Every week, each team chooses 2 students to be in the “COURAGE Club.” Students will be recognized on the Friday announcements. They come to the office for a treat and a positive phone call home! Students receive a certificate that is displayed in the common area.
4
TRIMESTER AWARDS TEAM AWARDS- Our team recognizes 28 students each trimester (7 per core class) who exemplify each letter in our COURAGE acronym. These students receive a certificate and a team t-shirt. Vikings with COURAGE-students can apply for this award twice a year. Winners receive a Viking hat, a plaque, and the opportunity to earn Viking Express in 8th grade. Parents of winners are invited to a formal assembly in their honor.
5
END OF YEAR AWARDS At the end of the year, our team recognizes any student who has received ZERO COURAGE Violations. These students receive a certificate and a team t-shirt.
6
CONSEQUENCES When students break the rules, they can earn COURAGE Violations. Some of these (like tardies) occur automatically, without teacher warning. For most, teachers will give students warnings/change seating arrangements and only hand out a violation if the poor behavior continues. 3 Violations per month=phone call/ home 4 Violations per month=meeting with counselor 6 Violations per month=COURAGE Packet ***If students are repeatedly earning violations, teachers may decide to implement an individualized behavior plan.
7
CONSEQUENCES Extreme, harmful, or excessive poor behaviors could result in an Major Violation instead of a COURAGE Violation. The student would meet with the assistant principal immediately and parents would be contacted.

Academic and Citizenship Grading
Your student will receive two grades for each class, including electives: 1. Academic Grade- This grade is factored from the scores on practices and assessments. Each trimester, the student starts over with a clean slate. 2. Citizenship Grade- This grade is factored from academic behaviors such as work completion, attendance, classroom behavior, and attitude. ***Students will receive an A, B, C, or F for both the Academic grade AND the Citizenship grade.***
12
Academic Grade For your student’s CORE classes (Math, Science, Utah Studies, and Language Arts): 10% of the Academic grade is based on scores for PRACTICE (classwork, homework, assignments, etc. graded usually on completion/participation) 90% of the Academic grade is based on scores for ASSESSMENTS (quizzes, tests, projects, assignments, etc. graded on MASTERY) ***Elective classes may have different categories.

Citizenship Grade Teachers will determine preliminary Citizenship grades by midterm each trimester. If students are below satisfactory, teachers will discuss an appropriate, attainable goal for improvement to be measured during the rest of the trimester. If the student reaches this goal, he/she will be able to improve their Citizenship grade as a high as a B (Satisfactory). Please note that a student who has a low Citizenship score will likely have Courage Violations as consequences as well. Please note that high schools look at these Citizenship grades to determine eligibility for extracurricular sports and activities.
