Aim: How to write neutralization reactions
2
Reactions of Acids with metals
According to Table J, any METAL LOCATED ABOVE H2 WILL REACT WITH AN ACID to produce H2 gas and a salt Example: Which metal, Mg or Cu will react with HCl? ________
3
Reactions of Acids with metals
General Rxn: Metal + Acid Salt + H2(g) Ex: Zn (s) + 2HCl (aq) _______ + ______ H2(g) ZnCl2(aq)
4
Reactions of Acids with metals
Ca + 2HCl CaCl H2 Metal Produces H2 Above H2 This is a SINGLE REPLACEMENT reaction; notice how H2 GAS is produced!
5
Reactions of metals with water
GROUP I METALS: All Group I metals react vigorously with “cold” water the Group II Metals become more reactive with water as you go DOWN the group Mg(s) + 2H2O(g) → _____(s) + _____ (g) Mg(OH) H2
7
Neutralization reactions
Neutralization occurs: # of H+ ions = # of OH- ions (equivalent or equal amounts) when an Arrhenius acid and an Arrhenius base react to form WATER and a SALT Example: Antacid for upset stomach neutralizes the acid in stomach and makes a neutral salt to provide relief
8
Neutralization reactions
HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O Acid Base Salt water Acid neutralizes base or base neutralizes acid It is a double replacement reaction.
9
Do we always get a completely neutral solution?
Strong Acids Strong Bases HCl HI LiOH RbOH HBr H2SO4 NaOH Ba(OH)2 HNO3 HClO4 KOH CsOH Sr(OH)2 Ca(OH)2 Do we always get a completely neutral solution? Combination Product (Acidic/Basic/Neutral) Endpoint pH (<7, 7, >7) Strong acid + Strong Base Strong acid + Weak Base Weak acid + Strong Base Neutral 7 Acidic <7 Basic >7
