Adjustable RF delay-line for synchronization of ring cavities
Situation: Synchronization of ring cavities requires precision delay of analog signals. Currently a long physical wire is used, but accuracy, phase delay and handability suffer. Target: Electronically adjustable variable delay of analog signals within a 50 system environment Mimic the delay of analog RF signals caused by wire length from cm to several meters (300ps to 2.5us) High phase fidelity required (< 500ps), low jitter (<500ps) Signal spec: 200kHz-25MHz (Sinusoidal), 1V, 50MHz/s change rate Approach: Investigation of different concepts and their applicability (e.g. Sample&Hold with Time-to-Digital Converters, Voltage-to-Delay elements, Adaptive Unity-gain buffers), extensive simulations Low noise / jitter design required (e.g. current mode approach) Depending on found solution(s), hardware implementation in a suitable technology (preferred target: High-Speed ASIC (either advanced CMOS (65nm) or SiGe BiCMOS (0.25u) Prototype design, implementation and measurement 8.
