2 Welcome to IB SL Physics
College Credit? Maybe. Work Hard? Definitely! Fulfilling? Absolutely! Brain Expansion? Like you wouldn’t believe!

3 Grades Red Hook Your teacher. See Syllabus. Red Hook Final.
1 take home test. 1 end of year project. IB. Moderator. 3 Exam papers plus internal assessment IA. Grade 1 – 7.

4 Books Materials Very Important Primary and Secondary Homer and Hamper
See syllabus! Very Important Check website and print handouts!

5 First Quiz to include questions on requirements and protocols!

6 IB Requirements The IB science course grade based on 3 written examinations and an independent investigation. The investigation is the internal assessment or IA. The IA is 20% of the IB grade. Your summer project (group 4) will require a reflection. You will write and submit to IB online. I’ll let you know more when I know.

7 Other Lab Work In addition to the IA there are required labs. The exam papers will ask questions based on the required labs as well as core course material. A minimum of 40 lab hours is required (including Group 4)

8 More information: IA Internal Assessment
With the guidance of the teacher, students will define their own unique research question and then perform an experiment to attempt to answer this question. The IB encourages a wide range of investigation types, including traditional hands-on experiments, processing information from online databases, or even working with computer simulations or mathematical models using a spreadsheet.

9 Meaningful Research Your work is meant to be a meaningful scientific study. You must do appropriate research and demonstrate an understanding of the scientific context of their study. You are expected to contribute your own thinking to the work.

10 Final Report The final report must be 6–12 pages in length, including footnotes, bibliography, graphs, charts, and pictures. Appropriate references are required. You must word process the report and use graphing and spreadsheet software where appropriate. The report should be logical, clear, and easy to follow without superfluous text. The final report should be similar to a real scientific journal article. However, the IB does not expect the you to demonstrate any knowledge or skills that go beyond the level of the course they are taking. The IA is not an extended essay.

11 Topics Syllabus Class meets double/single. First homework.
Full Sentences Show all work. Name Date Assignment

12 Hwk. Read Hamper p   Write/type a few paragraphs to explain how gaining knowledge using physics is different than knowledge in other areas. What is unique to physics? Explain, and give examples of how a physics theory is different than theories in everyday life. Explain what is meant by a "paradigm shift". Give an example of a paradigm shift other than the one in the text. Explain what is meant by a physical law - give an example. Read and think about all the quotes from famous physicists located in the green boxes. Write a sentence or two describing the meaning of each quote. Be prepared to discuss their meaning on your first quiz
