1 UNIT 1 Matter Days 36 and 37 October 19 and 20, 2017
Law of Conservation of Mass – Balancing Equations 8th Grade Science

2 Day 36 1. Take out your ABCD formative assessment card
Day Take out your ABCD formative assessment card. (I think it’s purple.) 2. Take out your homework (Balancing Act Practice). DO NOT TURN IT IN!!!!!

3 Look at this chemical equation and the question below it:
Question: This equation expresses which change? Choose the correct letter on your formative assessment (ABCD) card. Don’t let your neighbors see your answer. A. Two atoms combine to form one atom. B. Two atoms combine to form one molecule. C. Two elements combine to form a mixture. D. Two elements combine to form two new elements.

4 Homework: Worksheet – “How to Balance Chemical Equations”

5 Plan for today: 10-19-17 “Balancing Equations” Clue Game

6 E.Q. –What is the Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass?

7 Before we start the Clue game, let’s briefly review.

8 Complete this phrase. When you are trying to balance a chemical equation, changing a subscript is a “no-no” because changing a subscript… changes the substance. (When we balance equations, we aren’t changing the substances…but we may have to change how many molecules there are of each substance. So, we use coefficients.)

9 How does balancing equations illustrate and support the Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter?
*Because they require that you have the same mass after the reaction as you do before the reaction. This means… *The # and type of atoms are the same in the reactants and products (just in different combinations) *Although the state of matter of the products may be different from the reactants, the overall mass doesn’t change.

10 Let’s go over the practice problems on the “Balancing Act” sheet.

19 Balancing Equations CLUE game
Balancing Equations CLUE game! You will work with your group on this activity. There are 10 stations. Move to stations in numerical order. You will go to a station and work together to balance the equation at the top of the page. You must copy the equation and show your work. You can do the equations on the back of your answer sheet if you need more space. the answer (coefficients) will tell you items you can mark off the list as you try to narrow down the murder suspect, location and instrument used. Have fun but be cautious about your noise level.

20 Day 37 – Continuing “Clue game”

22 Homework: Worksheet – “How to Balance Chemical Equations”

23 MONDAY IS THE FINAL DAY TO TURN IN THE PERIODIC TABLE BASICS ANALYSIS QUESTIONS (on back of the directions). IT IS A 40-POINT ASSIGNMENT. I AM CUTTING OFF GRADING MONDAY. 2nd period – Devon, Nicole, Jaylon 5th period – Lilly, Brandon, Chase, Maya, Lincoln, Waylyn, Alexani, Jada 6th period – Zion, Austin, Maggie, Brooke, Nate, Jonathan, Andon, Gabriela, Brandon

24 Back to the Balancing Equations CLUE game

25 Let’s do the “Another Balancing Equations” sheet. Use pencil
Let’s do the “Another Balancing Equations” sheet. Use pencil. You may have to change coefficients a few times.

26 Wrap-up: Any questions?
