5. Why Do We Need the EDM Reference Model
Today, every system defines its own taxonomy for the life sciences content it manages
The result is:
Enormous amounts of wasted, redundant effort
Enormous barriers to information exchange and integration bewteen system
Defining the taxonomy used for a specific application does not add value to the application – it is essentially a cost of entry
As a software vendor, we would much rather build on a common reference model than have to build our own 5

Our product architecture will support the entire set of technologies that comprise the vision
The EDM reference model will be incorporated into every standard template, document and form we ship with our software
We are actively seeking out relationships with other vendors to build integrations based on the EDM Reference Model
We will provide a standard import tool that directly maps content from the EDM Reference Model into our products 6
