Problem Statement Location Management Overview
Location Update(LU): Occurs on either periodic intervals or upon every cell exchange. Paging : When a call arises toward a user, the network must page cells within the Location Area. Multi-Radio Power Management Problem Statement Paging and Location Update of multimode terminal are performed for each network interface. No cooperation among network interfaces under considering the power consumption. If each interface performs the Paging and Location Update independently, the overall power consumption of the mobile terminal increases. There needs coordination and control among network interfaces of multimode terminal in performing Paging and Location update in heterogeneous multi radio environment.
4
Location Management for Multimode Terminal
Maximum utilization of the active state interface Location update and Paging support for the idle state interface Maximum utilization of the low power consumption interface Location update and Paging support for the high power consumption interface
5
MRPM Application State Management of multiple network interfaces
Consideration of an network interface where paging is not supported
6
Example for MRPM Application
Assumption Power consumption : WiFi > WiMAX > 3GPP WiFi : No paging Selection rule : High Priority to lower power consumption interface WiFi WiMax 3GPP State Operation Sleep sleep mode operation Idle Disable Paging and LU for all Interfaces Active Paging and LU No Paging and LU for WiFi

MIH Services Extension
In a mobile terminal with multi-radio interfaces, one interface is selected for power management by MRPM application (MIH user). MRPM in MIH user needs the MIH services extension. MIH Information Service perspective MIH user requests and responses the policy and configuration information for MRPM. Need new information elements.
8
MIH Services Extension (2)
MIH Event service perspective Provides the change of power state from each interfaces. Sleep mode, Idle mode, Active mode Informs paging for another interface. Paged interface Need new primitives MIH Command service perspective MIH user sends the command for MRPM to selected interface. Power management Disable/Enable …. Sends command for power mode change(Idle=>Active) to called interface
9
Proposal Please incorporate the MIH services extension into section 5.1 of the by referencing the accompanying contribution, MRPM_Consideration.doc.
