If your son seems diagonally parked in a parallel universe . . .
If he gets lost in thought and it is clearly unfamiliar territory . . . then this presentation is for you!
2
A brain of two halves In the 1960s, Dr. Roger Sperry identified the two hemispheres of the brain - left and right.
3
Each one teach one . . . We learn: 10% of what we read
20% of what we hear 30% of what we see 50% of what we both see and hear 70% of what is discussed with others 80% of what we experience personally 90% of what we teach to someone else
4
Making links If the two halves of the brain are used together, brain power is increased. There are many activities that can connect the two, such as writing a list in different colours, turning text into a diagram (and vice versa), learning a list of items to a beat, constructing Mind Maps…

Ways to make things stick
When learning figures and other information, use chunking e.g becomes 365 and 1066 Use rhythm, rhyme or mnemonics e.g. My dear Aunt Sally (multiply and divide before you add or subtract) Display information above eye level Make context notes Use a study buddy Get to know your preferred learning style…
7
VAK strategies Visual learners: diagrams, charts, film, collages, visualisation, colour-highlighting, post-its… Auditory learners: reciting, pair work, discussion, word association, study buddies, music (chants, rhymes, raps etc.)…. Kinaesthetic learners: associating ideas with movement, card-sorting, making models, doing rather than sitting (interrupting learning with activity), study buddies….
8
Revisiting learning Something new starts fading after a few hours, but . . Revise it again in the next 4 hours and it will take 24 hours to fade Revise it within the 24 hours and it won’t fade for 4 days Revise it within the 4 days and it will ‘last’ 1½ weeks Revise it within the 1½ weeks and it will stick for a month get the idea?
