1 CH 9 SEC 2 BACTERIA

2 Choose 4 Terms and define

3 THE BACTERIAL CELL KEY- THERE ARE BILLIONS OF BACTERIA ON EARTH.
KEY- THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. THERE ARE MORE BACTERIA IN YOUR MOUTH THEN THERE ARE PEOPLE ON EARTH KEY- THEY ARE FOUND UNDER ROCKS, IN THE AIR, IN DEEP OCEAN VENTS, ON MOUNTAIN TOPS, AND ALL OVER YOUR BODY!

4 Key- bacteria come in all shapes and sizes

5

6 BACTERIAL CELL KEY- THEY WERE DISCOVERED BY LEEUWENHOEK LOOKING AT SCRAPINGS FROM HIS TEETH KEY- BACTERIA ARE PROKARYOTES (CELLS WITHOUT A NUCLEUS). KEY- THE GENETIC MATERIAL IN THEIR CELLS IS NOT CONTAINED IN A NUCLEUS.

7 Cont’d KEY- A BACTERIAL CELL LACKS MANY OTHER STRUCTURES THAT CELLS HAVE LIKE MITOCHONDRIA AND GOLGI BODIES MOVEMENT- SOME BACTERIA USE A FLAGELLUM (PLURAL FLAGELLA), A LONG WHIP LIKE STRUCTURE THAT HELPS A CELL TO MOVE

8 BASIC STRUCTURE OF BACTERIA (COPY)

9 IDENTIFY FLAGELLEM

10 SIZES AND SHAPES KEY- BACTERIA VARY GREATLY IN SIZE
KEY- MOST BACTERIAL CELLS HAVE ONE OF THREE BASIC SHAPES: SPHERICAL, RODLIKE, AND SPIRAL

11 Could this be Bacteria?

12 IDENTIFY SHAPES

16 List 3 types of harmful bacteria and what they do
1. 2. 3.

17 BASIC BACTERIA SKETCH

18 OBTAINING FOOD AND ENERGY
KEY- BACTERIA MUST HAVE FOOD SOURCE AND A WAY OF BREAKING DOWN THE FOOD TO RELEASE ITS ENERGY. AUTOTROPHS- SOME BACTERIA ARE AUTOTROPHS AND MAKE THEIR OWN FOOD EX- PLANT LIKE BACTERIA USE SUNLIGHT TO MAKE THEIR OWN FOOD

19 Can you see different types of bacteria?

20 HETEROTROPHS- BACTERIA THAT DOESN’T MAKE ITS OWN FOOD.
KEY- INSTEAD THESE BACTERIA CONSUME OTHER ORGANISMS OR THE FOOD ORGANISMS MAKE. EX- THE BACTERIA THAT HELPS LEAVES DECAY ON THE FOREST FLOOR

21 RESPIRATION RESPIRATION- IS THE PROCESS BY WHICH BACTERIA BREAKS DOWN FOOD USING OXYGEN FOR ENERGY

22

23 Reproduction KEY- WHEN BACTERIA HAVE ENOUGH FOOD, THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE, AND OTHER SUITABLE CONDITIONS THEY THRIVE AND REPRODUCE FREQUENTLY

24 List 3 types of helpful bacteria and what they do
1. 2. 3.

25 Bacterial reproduction copy and label

26 REPRODUCTION KEY- THERE ARE TWO WAYS IN WHICH BACTERIA CAN REPRODUCE
1. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION- A PROCESS THAT INVOLVES ONLY ONE PARENT AND PRODUCES OFFSPRING THAT ARE IDENTICAL TO PARENT. 2. SEXUAL REPRODUCTION- TWO PARENTS COMBINE THEIR GENETIC MATERIAL TO PRODUCE A NEW ORGANISM WHICH DIFFERS FROM BOTH PARENTS
