1 500th Anniversary of the Reformation
Service with Communion p6

2 Opening sentences All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. (Rom 3:22b-24 NRSV) In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

3 A mighty fortress is our God LHS 195
Opening Hymn A mighty fortress is our God LHS 195

4 1. A mighty fortress is our God,
a trusty shield and weapon, our faithful helper in all need, no matter what may happen. The old evil foe now means deadly woe; deep guile and great might are his dread arms in fight; on earth he has no equal.

5 2. With our own might is nothing done;
we'd soon be lost, rejected. But for us fights the very one, whom God himself elected. And who may this be? Christ Jesus is he. He is our great Lord, there is no other God; and he has won the battle.

6 3. Though hordes of devils gather here,
all eager to devour us, we tremble not, we do not fear, they cannot overpower us. This world's prince may still scowl fierce as he will, he does us no harm, he's judged, he's overcome; one little word can fell him.

7 4. Despite all foes, the Word shall stand against all their endeavour; God's gifts and Spirit, close at hand, shall be with us forever. Though they cause distress, take all we possess, though they hurt and kill, we are victorious still; the kingdom's ours forever. Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott Martin Luther Tr composite, David Schubert (1990)

8 Confession and Absolution
Friends in Christ…ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. ♫ Our help is in the name of the Lord. He made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my sins to the Lord. Then he forgave the guilt of my sin.

9 Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor helpless sinner, confess to you all my sins, and repent of all the evil I have done. I have deeply displeased you and deserve your punishment in time and in eternity.

10 But I am sorry for my sins, and I ask you, for the sake of the holy innocent sufferings and death of your dear Son Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me. Amen.

11 I ask each of you in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? I do. Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in his name? Do you intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as in God's presence, and to strive daily to lead a holy life, even as Christ has made you holy?

25 Hymn

26 Sermon

27 Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

28 of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.

29 For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

30 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

31 Offering Hymn

32 Offertory Song ♫ Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

36

37 Holy, Holy, Holy ♫ Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts; Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

38 Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
