Comments 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ We are able to teach classes with a special interest or to fulfill unique needs. DL allows interaction between students with like interests from different schools. The distance learning program allows students to become acquainted with peers from other schools. They get to know the "culture" of another learning community. Additionally, because of distance learning, program offerings are expanded to more students. The technology offered (ELMO) was of great use, PowerPoint presentations using the computer was also quite helpful. We have a wonderful relationship with our connecting school, it is a pleasure to work with the aide there, she is an extraordinary professional. Great access to technology, teleconferences and student interaction with other schools. The available technology, cultural infusion between districts, upper level status students get an expansion of class offerings. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Comments 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Shorter classes - some schools not in session when we are - occasional faxes did not get to sites and held up class. Each sites arrangements and camera locations are questionably suited for American Sign Language. Teacher aides are sometimes not consistent or familiar with AV equipment. It has become a dumping ground at times for those who may not represent the most creative or the most academically equipped. When we first began, only the best and brightest were allowed in DL courses. If the connecting school is a school without the courier system it is hard to get materials to them. Schedule conflicts, clocks were not synchronized in each building and changed during the year, at one point we waited six minutes for our connecting site to begin class. Occasional breakdown of equipment and we had numerous new and substitute aides at our connecting school who did not know how to turn up sound. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Comments 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ New room furniture for the kids, regular cleanings of the room, new updated computers, clocks synchronized to minimize schedule overlaps. We also need a real phone. I personally need a laptop at the teacher station in class so I don't have to disconnect and reconnect my laptop, it wastes too much time. I would build in one or two travel days a month to visit the other sites. The size of the screens and the clarity issue causes a loss of the details. Larger Screens with higher definition - I would like to see every receive site with in room computers. Please ensure there is a room aide present in the remote classrooms at all times. There were several occasions I had supervision problems. It would be helpful if the aide was visible or otherwise made it clear they are present. As classes grow in size, seeing individual students is diminished; everyone must be "fit" into the picture and is therefore much "farther away" and difficult to see and establish rapport with. Comments 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? I formed a great bond with the room aide at my connecting site, and it really helped to overcome some of the obstacles we had to face this year for example schedule differences, absences etc. I had problems with my remote site and often had to perform classroom management tasks for them I think these tasks should be done by their aide. Although class size is large (25) we were ok. For some reason this year, maybe because of having two extra sites, there seemed to be too much time missed by one or both sites at any given time. We fell behind I thought. This is the 1st time in all these years that I have asked any students to leave at midterm as a result of discipline problems. The ease of the use of technology and the effectiveness. I don't feel as afraid of technology as I thought I would. All my students at my connecting site took the AP exams this year. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Comments 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom? Yes more computer images. I started using some online videos and connections to college websites. I integrated music effectively via internet, field trips, I utilized ELMO a lot, was able to show authentic documents. More do "on your own" assignments for students to work on where the schedules were not the same. I use a variety of activities and I have to say that my distance learning teaching assistants gave maximum support to my students and I in getting and completing assignments. Using the computer, it was nice to have because we used it spontaneously on several occasions, for example to play a music file. I had never used an ELMO in a classroom. It is an easy technology and great way to share handouts and pictures. ELMO is also great for doing guided notes with the students. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Comments 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily …...distance learning classroom instruction (such as or telephone)? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I used Blackboard. This is a really great tool for DL classes. I communicated with student via ing the assistants in the room. (Additional Comments) I have to admit that when I first learned I would be teaching a DL course I was intimidated by the DL equipment & found that most often things went smoother than I thought they would. I have used the phone with one mother, with some students and a guidance counselor as well as daily faxing. , telephone, The aide at my connecting site was an amazing help with contacting students and their families. all the time, telephone, and fax. Some interaction by mail. Fax, video-recorded lessons, and phone. Some , snail mail and we participated in FFA activities at the state level. BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support

Comments 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Three times, I wish we could have meet and greet exchange day like we had at the onset of this program, sometime in November or December. Once to Sharon Springs, once to Schalmont, we met as a group at SUNY Albany for a Chinese play then had lunch at Ocean Palace. I made one visit to the remote sites I was able to have interaction and special guests available to whole group. Unfortunately, I did not visit. Last year, 06-07, when I had Schoharie, I did visit because it was so close. If I am teaching to Tupper Lake again next year I will try to make it up there at least once. I visited Schoharie once in the fall and we met together (both schools) at a café in Schenectady. No, but I would love to. It is such a great distance that it's probably not cost effective I visited Cobleskill twice, but Malone is just too far, 7 hour trip and a lot of money in gas.
