Voice of the Customer R16901: Student Initiated Projects
RIT Hot Wheelz Thermal Management System
2
Motivation Thermal management systems are crucial to the performance of electric vehicles RIT Hot Wheelz first year building a formula electric vehicle Limited to no time to properly design or test a thermal management system
3
Project Description Goals: Objectives:
Create an efficient thermal management system that will greatly enhance the performance of the RIT Hot Wheelz vehicle Objectives: Test and analyze the current thermal management system on the vehicle Design and create a more efficient thermal management system to be utilized on the vehicle for competition in Spring 2017
4
Research Three factors of thermal performance Heat Generation Heat Transfer Allowable Temperature The temperature of a component is the balance between the heat generated and the heat transferred Air cooling: directing air flow through the use of fans or heat sinks Liquid cooling: cool liquid is sent through channels incorporated in heat exchangers or radiators Air Cooling Advantages Simple system Lower cost Air Cooling Disadvantages Less effective heat transfer Cooling capacity limited by ambient temperature Liquid Cooling Advantages Cooling capacity can be adjusted by adjusting fluid flow rate Stable cooling performance Liquid Cooling Disadvantages Space needed for tubing Costlier repair and maintenance More complex system Resources: EV Forum ( Electric Car 101 Article (
