WAS THE WOMEN'S LIBERATION
MOVEMENT RADICAL ?
2
INTRODUCTION Women's liberation movement = struggle for women
equality/rights Objective ==> freeing women from oppression + male supremacy WAS IT RADICAL ? ==> Predominantly NOT : not the first time women fought for freedom and rights Women's liberation movement (1960s) : also inspired by the civil rights movement
3
I) THE RISE OF THE MOVEMENT
Betty Friedan and her book « The Feminine Mystique » = origin of the movement Friedan was living the American Dream, but it was not necessarily good Her book helped revive the feminist movement She helped found the National Organization for Women (NOW)
4
The National Organization for Women (NOW) was founded in 1966
NOW's motto : « Taking action for women's equality » NOW had 6 main issues to address Therefore, the WLM was NOT radical ==> they were not extreme !
5
II) WOMEN'S MOVEMENT WITHIN THE FEDERAL SYSTEM
In addition, the WLM was NOT radical because ==> implemented in the federal system (laws) 1964 : Title VII of the Civil Rights Act 1968 : Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) 1970 : Equal Pay Act 1972 : Title IX of the Education Amendments 1973 : « Roe vs Wade »
6
III) THE RADICALS Created in 1969
Objective = eliminate male supremacy + change the federal system For them, all men oppress all women. Therefore, they want a world for themselves ==> critical of NOW Frequent demonstrations
7
CONCLUSION For the most part, the WLM = NOT RADICAL
Reasons : not extreme + accepted by the government However, some radicals (« Redstockings ») Their actions made a difference, but not completely, as we can see today
