1 Aqua scale Exploring Resilience of Community Water Networks through CPHS-Enabled Platform Qing Han Supervisor: Professor Nalini Venkatasubramanian

2 Motivations Water Infrastructure Resilience Concerns
WATER – a precious natural resource Water Infrastructure Resilience Concerns A critical resource and lifeline service. Water infrastructure has been developed over decades (centuries sometimes). Become large, complex and vulnerable to failures. Damaged to underground pipelines is often hidden. Close to 237,600 breaks per year in the US. Approximately $2.8 billion lost in yearly revenue (AWWA). Period of drought increases water demand and adds strain to water supply. Community disruptions. Resource wastage. Contamination. Threat to public health. Why we care so much? A critical resource and lifeline service to communities worldwide. Water infrastructure: water generation, treatment, storage and distribution AWWA: American Water Works Association

3 Objectives AquaSCALE Framework
Understand resilience issues in cyberspace before instantiating them into a physical infrastructure. Identify operational degradation in aging infrastructures. Improve speed and accuracy of damages estimation. Reduce service restoration time. Issues: pipeline damage, water pollution, schedule pipeline replacement, damage predication based on historical data, damage estimation Pipe leak is one of the most frequent types of failure of water networks. Water resource wastage is mainly caused by pipe breakage. Current Research: Leak Detection

4 1. Twitter Data Analysis 3 interesting projects, basic idea REAL DATA El-nino year (from the end of last year to April this year) Pattern + Data (part of them are useful) People report a leak event using different words EX tweet from those who work in water departments (water agency) may have more relevance Extract related information (Leak? Where? Reason? Damage?) Identify vulnerable locations How people report the leak event

5 2. Social Media Data Collection APP

6 3. Testbed for Monitoring and Controlling Water Network
- hardware
