Bar Modelling is an approach we have gradually introduced across the school.
This year we will focus on fully implementing in all classes as an approach to visualise problems concepts or present findings. Early foundations are established in Early Years and built upon in each Year Group (applying to more complex problems by Upper KS2) The Bar Model links directly with pupils use of manipulatives (hands on exploring of concepts to deepen understanding)

Building it, drawing it, solving it….
The Bar Model doesn’t do the calculating for you – children still need to know their number bonds, timestables and written methods for adding/subtracting/multiplying and dividing larger numbers – but it helps you to see what calculations you actually need to do. We will show the children how to use the bar model as a method to visual and solve problems and understand a concept. By: Building it, drawing it, solving it….
