1
Question: Why do camels have big feet?
2
Pressure Aim: To investigate how much pressure our feet exert on the ground. Method: Use graph paper to measure the area (cm2) of one foot. Multiply by 2. Convert the area into m2 (divide by ) Calculate your weight in Newtons (F = m.g). Divide your weight (N) by the area of both feet (m2).
3
Pressure equation and units
Pressure is a measure of how much force is applied over a certain area. Pressure = Force (N) / Area (m2) Units N/m2 1 N/m2 = 1Pa (pascal) Task: Draw a triangle to show the relationship between force, area and pressure.
4
Reducing pressure
5
Air pressure Aim: To observe the effect and strength of air pressure.
Method: Fill an aluminium can with 1cm of water. Boil water over bunsen. Tip upside-down in ice cold tub of water.
6
Atmospheric pressure 1 atmosphere = 101.3kPa About 100,000 N/ m2.
Equates to 10,000 kg/m2.
7
Water pressure What happens when diving suits loose pressure?
8
Deep sea fish are able to cope with high pressure
Deep sea fish are able to cope with high pressure. Task: Find out what the pressure is at a depth of 3000m where Hairy Angler fish live.
