1 How do we use Grid System/Coordinates?
Northern & Southern Equator = ___º Poles = ___º Latitude Prime Meridian = ___º Longitude Hemispheres How do we use Grid System/Coordinates? Name _____________ Period AB1 A2 A3 A4 AB5 B2 B3 B4 W E S N W E S N Eastern & Western

2 1.4 Latitude/Longitude & GIS
QUIZ: Continents, Oceans & Cardinal Directions 1.3 (finish up) Types of Regions / Journal 1.4 Latitude, Longitude, & Hemispheres 1.4 Zombie Road Trip (Lat./Long. Practice) 1.4 Geo Spatial Revolution : Intro to GIS

3 QUIZ on TH 8/31 – F 9/1 Compass Rose with the 4 Cardinal Directions (north, south, east, west) 7 Continents (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America & South America) 5 Oceans (Artic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific & Southern) SOUTHERN OCEAN

4 Large Scale Banana Production
REGIONS Perceptual: US Pizza Preference Map Large Scale Banana Production Formal: Provinces of France Functional: Agriculture Production

5 What are REGIONS: An area sharing similar or unifying features.

6 FORMAL REGIONS Defined by GOVERNMENT BOUNDARIES. Examples: National Border of Uganda, City Limits of Houston

7 Defined by a SPECIFIC USE
FUNCTIONAL REGIONS Defined by a SPECIFIC USE Examples: Airline, Newspaper, Public Transport Routes Airline Routes Climate Zones of the World

8 PERCEPTUAL REGION Loosely defined by PEOPLE’S POINT of VIEW. Examples: Middle East, South

9 Work in pairs to make a list of new examples of
3+ FORMAL REGIONS, 3+ FUNCTIONAL REGIONS & 3+ PERCEPTUAL REGIONS

10

11 So What Region is Texas in?
1.3 REGIONS JOURNAL Write a paragraph giving 3+ reasons explaining which perceptual region you think Texas belongs in. So What Region is Texas in? South? Southwest? Plains? Midwest? Central? South Central? Gulf Coast? Dixie? Mexico? This is an example of what kind of region? Perceptual

12 Imaginary lines that run but MEASURE NORTH / SOUTH;
east / west but MEASURE NORTH / SOUTH; LATITUDE Poles = 90º Equator = 0º Latitude lines can also be called “Parallels”

13 Imaginary lines that run north / south but
MEASURE EAST / WEST; LONGITUDE Prime Meridian = 0º ALSO CALLED MERIDIANS

14 GRID SYSTEM = COORDINATES
LAtitude always comes first, then lOngitude (alphabetically), a lot like X, Y axis points in math. Examples : 43ºN, 27ºE or ºS, 73ºW

15 VID CLIP: Latitude/Longitude Rap

16 HEMISPHERES Hemispheres are large REGIONS that divide the world into HALF EAST/WEST is divided at the PRIME MERIDIAN& 180º NORTH/SOUTH is divided at the EQUATOR to the POLES 4 Hemispheres Northern Southern Eastern Western

17 NORTHERN HEMISPHERE Everything NORTH of the EQUATOR

18 SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE Everything SOUTH of the EQUATOR

19 EASTERN HEMISPHERE Everything EAST of the PRIME MERIDIAN (0º)up to 180º

20 WESTERN HEMISPHERE Everything WEST of the PRIME MERIDIAN (up to 180º)

21

22 PRACTICE: ZOMBIE ROADTRIP
Use Atlas pg 68-69 Use latitude and longitude to find where each city named is located Use letters to show where each city is found on the map Write Lat/Long Coordinates

23 GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)
A computerized system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data.

24 VID CLIP: Geospatial Revolution

25

26 20 QUESTIONS Pairs 1st person chooses a major city found in the Atlas on pg 8-9 2nd person makes guesses using yes/no questions about the hemispheres, continents, latitude and longitude coordinates

27 BATTLESHIP Pair up Use maps to “hide” 4 battleships on the oceans of the world Battleships may only be located on latitude/longitude lines ending in 0 none of your battleships may be located in the same 2 hemispheres as any of your other battleships Take turns use latitude/longitude coordinates “torpedo” your partner’s battleship

28 Longitude & Latitude are easy if you have the right attitude
LATITUDE measures South and North Up and down from the Equator they sally forth They’re the lines that run from East to West Like the rungs of a ladder, you’ll pass the test Just don’t forget they go both ways, North is up, South is down, so look both ways The Prime Meridian is where the LONGITUDE’s coming from Zero at Greenwich is where to get your bearings from Measures west to East Lines are drawn from North to South If it seems confusing, just keep listening to my mouth Just don’t forget they go both ways, East is right, West is left, just look both ways. Like a number line or a football field, to the cardinal directions Latitude yields Like a number line or a football field, to the cardinal directions Longitude yields

29 CAPITALS of ASIA Atlas pg 1-24 = 1st set 25-48 = 2nd set
