3 L/O: Fluently Add Mixed Numbers
Activity Two – Fraction Strips Build your two fractions and shade what you have. Are the unit fractions the same? Can you make one to look like the other or do we have to change both? Do it. Name your unit fractions so you don’t forget what the unit is and tear off what you don’t have. Combine the fractions, then the wholes. Look at the fraction; does it need to be simplified? Look at your estimate; is your answer reasonable?

4 Practice 1.) It snowed 2 3/5 inches in the morning and 1 1/4 inches in the afternoon. What was the total amount of snowfall for the day? 2.) Drake drank 1 5/6 cups of orange juice in the morning and 2 3/7 cups after soccer practice that afternoon. How much orange juice did he drink in all?

5 Practice 3.) Ann was making macaroni and cheese and used 7/12 of a cup of cheddar and 1 1/4 cup of parmesan. How much cheese did she use in all? 4.) Isadora rode her bicycle 2 3/8 miles from her house to the park. Then she rode 5/6 miles from the park to the library. How many miles did she ride in all?
