a. Summarize the 1st paragraph
(The pilgrims have been at sea for some time and there is some concern amongst the crew that the ship is falling apart. They decided that it can be fixed and that they should continue rather than return home)

b. After reading the paragraph at the top of Pg 62:
How does Bradford’s description of the few who were not afflicted by disease reflect his moral values? (It shows he admires self-sacrifice that arose from the people’s religious beliefs and sense of community.)

c. What do you think Bradford hopes his readers will gain from learning of this experience?

(Bradford wants to show that the Pilgrims’ faith and values produce a sharp difference between their behavior and that of the crew) f. (They noticed that the Pilgrims were Christians to one another and even to themselves (the crew) while the crew had been unkind to the pilgrims and each other but once they became sick they turned and became more humane) *stop reading at page 63

Answers a. Pg. 63 Who is Samoset, and how do the Pilgrims meet him?
(Samoset is a Native American from lands east of Plymouth. He learned basic English while living in the vicinity of English fishing parties. The Pilgrims meet Samoset after he approaches their settlement and addresses them.) b. Pg. 64 Why do you think Bradford refers to Squanto as a “special instrument sent of God?” (Because he helped them with planting and knowledge of the surrounding areas which were key in their survival.) c. Pg. 65 What special event does the journal end with? (The first Thanksgiving.)
