Authority Why do we consent to people having power over us?
What is authority? Governments have used certain methods to gain authority with the people: Mandate to join the EU in 1970s. Youtube: Nelson Mandela at 90.

Lord Acton (1887): Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” However: Hobbes believed that power is v. important and a leader should use any means possible including violence to keep control of the people.

Control theory is a way that political parties can use their influence in order to get into power. Very often they rely on the media to show the government as failing. Youtube: prime ministers questions 12th November 2008 Think of more examples.

Homework Half of class to research the core ideologies of the Labour, Lib Dem and Conservative parties. Focus on: taxation, public services, war and conflict and government powers and state control. A brief outline to be presented to the class next lesson

Homework Half the class to present on the role of multinational groups: Explain the relationship between the Commonwealth, EU, NATO, and WTO This can be done in a diagram with labels and explanations and presented to the class next lesson.
