Activity 2x1 Identify a situation when you were unsuccessful at getting what you wanted or needed: What was the situation? What did you want to happen? What did you say/do? (Be specific and honest!) What is Framing? Talk about the impact of what you see when a piece of art or poster has different color frames around it – see paragraph from HRB article as good example Have TedTalk ready to go in browser 4:52-7:15. The only difference is the way the question was asked, the results were overwhelmingly different Briefly, why: the way the brain interprets what it sees and what it hears So, today we are applying framing to our verbal communication, how we talk about what we want and need. Authority vs Influence
Authority = Granted Make decisions Give orders Enforce Policies Influence = Earned Capacity to shape what happens next Effect the action, behavior and opinion of others Can you influence without authority? Working with you to create a healthy, inclusive, engaging work environment

Power: Positional & Personal
Positional Power Personal Power: Knowledge/Expertise Relationship Resource Working with you to create a healthy, inclusive, engaging work environment

Growing Personal Power & Influence
Self –Awareness Awareness of other Mutual goal Listening! Know the problem Working with you to create a healthy, inclusive, engaging work environment

Putting It All Together
Why is this important? To you? The other person? What is the problem that needs to be addressed? Why should the other person care? What is the big picture? How does it fit into what is important for the organization? Where did we end the previous conversation? Where did we leave off? What is your personal power/influence in this area? 50-yard line assessment What can you do differently? Working with you to create a healthy, inclusive, engaging work environment
