1 (In a performance oriented environment)
HOW TO DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET by: Dominique Hall-CARR Kortschak Center Hello my name is Dominique Hall-Carr and I will be covering with you today “How to Develop a Growth Mindset” in a “performance oriented environment”) (In a performance oriented environment)

2 Learning outcomes To be able to effectively define the concept of a “growth mindset” Assessing how a growth mindset can be applied in a fast-pace academic environment at USC After the presentation you should be able to “effectively define the concept of a growth mindset” Assessing how a growth mindset can be applied in a fast-paced academic environment at USC

3 WHAT IS GROWTH MINDSET ? Concept developed by Stanford Professor Carol Dweck Defined as a mindset in which individuals view “view success as resulting from the expenditure of effort” In contrast, Dweck explains that some individuals may fall within a “fixed mindset” : “view success as dependent on the amount of intelligence one has to begin with” “You may be asking yourself what is a growth mindset anyways? “…Well that is a great question! Growth mindset is a concept developed by Stanford Professor Carol Dweck. Dweck defined this term as the ability to view success as resulting from the expenditure of effort” Dweck further explains that individuals with a growth mindset embrace all challenges, see all mistakes as a process to learning and do not worry how smart they look, expect to expand effort, and have positive learning outcomes in the long run In contrast, the opposing mindset is defined by Dweck as a “fixed mindset”; essentially individuals who fall into this mindset “view success as dependent on the amount of intelligence one has to begin with” They often view their ability in approaching any subject (as something you either have or you don’t), they worry about how smart they look, and do not embrace any challenges they don’t feel confident in,” ASK yourself which mindset do you fall within ? Is it a fixed mindset or growth mindset ? How about during Midterm or Finals season ? We all can find ourselves moving between different mindsets depending on the circumstances. Lets discuss how we can move more towards a Growth mindset no matter what circumstance ! Clip Art

4 How The Brain Develops Modern brain imaging has demonstrated that when people acquire new skills the areas of the brain responsible for these skills become more dense w/ neural tissue -- this process is known as neuroplasticity Neuroplasticity disputes the claim that the brain does most of its maturation before Kindergarten So, we know what a growth mindset according to Dweck. However, lets discuss what this means in terms of brain development. As you can see in the image through the process of neuroplasticity your brain forms new connections as meet the challenge and learn ! Similar, to your body muscles when you go to the gym to lift weights to build more muscle , your brain too needs that mental workout ; and gradually it will get stronger ! Image from Google images

5 What are the ways to keep a growth mindset ???
In a FAST PAST ENVIRONMENT AT USC? Lets transition, to discussing ways we can maintain a HEALTHY GROWTH mindset in such a performance driven environment at USC!... Also let us not forget to enjoy the process of reaching a open mindset ! (p.s. you are on the road to being a fabulous Growth mindsetter by enjoying the PROCESS) Image from USC website

6 Tips to maintaining a growth mindset
1. Learn to hear your fixed mindset “voice” 2. Recognize that you have a choice 3.Talk back to your challenges w/ a Growth mindset voice ! 4. Take the growth mindset action ! In maintaining a growth mindset here are a few suggestions that will keep you in control of your mindset; in spite of the demands of just being a student. #1 Learn to hear your fixed mindset “voice” Essentially, when faced with challenges, be aware if you start to hear a voice inside you that causes you to question yourself….questions like “Are you sure you have what it takes to be a Biochemistry major?’” #2 Recognize that you have choice- this just means how interpret your challenges is a CHOICE; you can either interpret challenges you face from a growth mindset lens and view it as signs you may need to edify your learning strategies, stretch yourself, and EXPAND your abilities ! OR you can choose to view your challenges through a fixed mindset lens that sees your difficulties as a sign that you LACK in ability or talent. #3 Talk back to your challenges w/ a Growth mindset voice – meaning be ready for your fixed voice to emerge and have a comeback growth mindset statement to tell yourself when you start to hear that Fixed mindset voice during times of challenge, setbacks, and criticism. #4 Take the growth mindset action – meaning EMBRACE your challenges, learn from your setbacks and try again, embrace your challenges and constructive criticism ! Make the CHOICE to maintain a growth mindset !
