Introduction What is Student Services?
What are the trends in the job market? What else exists in Higher Education that provides student support? Are there careers something that peak your interest? INTRODUCTION NOTES 1: This presentation will focus on illustrating these jobs in Higher Education Student Services Student Activities Athletic Media & Video Productions Alumni Relations Student Affairs & Discipline 2: After this presentation we hope to provide an insight regarding job trends in higher education as it pertains to positions among Departments of Student Services 3: We will also present other jobs in higher education with a similar resemblance and function of professionals in Student Services 4: Lastly we plan to tie all these positions together by describing similar functions as it pertains to student development which may be appealing to others interested in the field.

Student Activities What is Student Activities?
What is the purpose of Student Activities? 61.3% -participating in extracurricular student activities in college helped to reinforce their degree skills (Clark, Marsden, Whyatt, Thompson & Walker, 2015). 82.7% -participating in extracurricular student activities in college yielded extra non-degree related skill development (Clark, Marsden, Whyatt, Thompson & Walker, 2015). Challenges Facing Professionals Student Activities Employment Trends 1. What is Student Activities? Student engagement in campus sponsored activities and events 2. According to an interview with Dr. Joy Hamm (Dean of Student Services at CVCC) there are 2 main purposes of Student Activities within Student Services student engagement student skill building (Hamm, 2015). 3.61.3% -participating in extracurricular student activities in college helped to reinforce their degree skills (Clark, Marsden, Whyatt, Thompson & Walker, 2015). % -participating in extracurricular student activities in college yielded extra non-degree related skill development (Clark, Marsden, Whyatt, Thompson & Walker, 2015). 5. Challenges Facing Professionals: ‘burn-out’ (Hamm, 2015). ‘restricted reflexivity’ (Kahn, 2014). 6. Student Activities Employment Trends: Young Professionals & High Turn Over student centered, energetic & passion for working with students (Hamm, 2015) be highly motivated and relate easily to students of all backgrounds (Hamm, 2015)

What is an Assistant AD of Video & Media Productions? What are the career paths? Education & Experience Requirements Education and Level of Experience across Media, Marketing, Communication, Student Services, and Career Services Directors Years of Experience What is an Assistant AD of Video & Media Productions? After interviewing Jim Nachtman, Assistant AD of Video & Media Productions at Penn State, it was clear this position is very diverse and requires one to wear a lot of hats. Typical Functions Supervise full-time, part-time, and temp employees Manage budgets, tv contracts, marketing contracts, building renovations Provide Gameday technical support regarding live video broadcasts Direct and provide support to student interns What are the career paths? Jim Stated networking was his path to help him get to where he is today. Jim began as a coach and freelanced on the side 3. Other positions Equivalent experience and education with witting, communication, and interpersonal skills preferred He began as a coach and freelanced on the side **Note: Jim said, “Degrees help get someone started but the relationships and networking provide for upward mobility.” 4. How does this position support student development? How does this position support student development? What is the significance of this graph? Higher the degree = higher quality of life The degree can only do so much The co-curricular experience such as networking, working as a team, critically thinking, and problem solving on the job which stimulates this learning Jim provides students with planned career pathways by providing students with internship opportunities, and career development, he is also involved in career fairs. 2. In what ways is this career similar to other careers in student services? According to Jim (2015), “This position has a huge responsibility within higher education and understanding the “Why” is an essential component of success.” The Why is putting the students first and providing them quidance so when they leave Penn State, not only are they better than when they arrived, but they are ready to be future leaders, parents, great citizens to society. All positions not only related to students services but higher education, this is the ultimate reason we as professionals do what we do.
