2 Could this be you? It is your senior year and you are not sure what your plan is after graduating. You don’t know what kind of post-secondary education path is for you, or you may be thinking about heading straight into the workforce. What you do know you want a good job with good pay and benefits. You also enjoy working with your hands. You are open to ideas and career possibilities, but you may not be sure of what is out there.

3 Welcome to the manufacturing industry!
The manufacturing industry is an industry of hundreds of different jobs which are in high demand, have high wages and can be located in your hometown or in another state. Employers are in serious need of filling these positions. Some positions require a trade school or apprenticeship program, others require nothing more than a diploma or GED. The one requirement most employers seek: ATTENDANCE! So if you can show up to work on time, there is a high likelihood you will be earning above minimum wage and in some cases over $20 an hour right out of high school!

5 Apprenticeship Programs: Apprenticeships are a great way to get education and hands on training for a specific trade. These apprenticeship programs get you on the job paid training while they pay for school. This means you will come out of a trade program having earned on average $30-50,000 a year, certified as a journeyman, with zero school debt, and often employed with a pay raise leading to double what you have been earning as an apprentice. 6 Trade School Requirements/Things to Consider:
GED or High School Diploma “Earn while you learn”- full pay and benefits while training Union Trade Schools pay your tuition Non Union offer a range of financial help Looking for Reliable (Attendance!), hard working, willing to learn individuals Math (Algebra, geometry, Pre Cal) There are Pre-Apprenticeship programs available through OTI and specific ones for women. *These can give you a glimpse before starting an apprenticeship and will give you a leg up when applying to programs

7 Northwest College of Construction is NonUnion
Northwest College of Construction is NonUnion. They do charge tuition, however they have multiple scholarship opportunities and some companies like Slayden Construction will actually send you to them for training and pay your tuition.

8 Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute
Apprenticeship Opportunities Requirements: 17+ with GED or HS Diploma Length of program 4 years with 4 weeks of classes a year Portland, Redmond and Tangent Locations Classroom at PNWCI

9 Laborers Apprenticeship and Training
Looking for individuals who are mature, on time and follow through 360 hours of classes, or a minimum of 120 hours each year 4,000 hours of on job training 2 year program, earning ~$30 per/hr by end of program They place you in jobs Advancement every 6mo Outdoors, hands on, physical work As an apprentice you try all different areas of labor work and can focus in a specialized area for your journeyman licence.

10 Require 2.0 GPA -College Placement test-Math 60 and Writing 101
SMWIA- Sheet Metal Workers International Association SMART- Sheet Metal, Air, Rail Fabrication- take flat sheet of metal and form it Require 2.0 GPA -College Placement test-Math 60 and Writing 101 5 year program, 5 weeks of school each year- receive associate's degree Start out earning $50,000/yr with benefits Average wage at end of apprenticeship $100,000/yr They place you in jobs Sheet Metal Worker Welder Architectural Industrial Specialty Pattern Makers- create patterns for folding to attain particular forms Locations in Portland and Springfield EMP in Seattle is an example Of a sheet metal project

11 Community College Community Colleges offer 1, 2, and 4 year programs in a wide variety of expanding fields! -Evening and night classes available. Possibility to start taking classes while still in high school. -Most programs require on the job experience which means you will be earning money while going through your program! -Oregon Promise can cover up to 90 credits(2 full years) minimizing the amount of debt you will accrue during your program.

12 Mechatronics at LBCC A mechatronics technician is a cross between a millwright in mechanical skills, an industrial electrician in troubleshooting expertise, and a computer programmer in programming and operating automated equipment including industrial robots and commercial heating and cooling systems. 2 year program to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree

13 Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology through LBCC
This program is designed to give the student a balance of theory and practical experience gained by diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and rebuilding components and live equipment. Program runs at a brand new state of the art 25,000 square foot facility! 2 year program

15 On The Job Training One of the ways to receive training in these
careers is through on the job training. There are several advantages to this training: It is usually free, and you can receive pay while you learn. It is often specific to your job, so you can hone your craft. You can learn from seasoned employers who have relevant and recent experience.

16 Local opportunities... Many local companies in our region offer ample opportunities for on the job training. The best advice is to choose a trade that interests you and then seek out companies that are hiring. During the interview process, make sure to ask about on the job training, advancement opportunities, tuition reimbursement and cross training (the ability to learn a variety of skills, not just one specific craft). After landing the job, remember these three expectations and the opportunities will follow: Show up to work on time Have a good attitude Be a teamplayer

Lease Crutcher Lewis Construction company offering entry level positions in a variety of office systems (accounting, HR, marketing, IT, payroll, etc. (Majority of the skilled trades are sub-contracted out such as drywall, laborers, pile drivers, etc.) Mr. Rooter Plumbing Plumbing company offering entry level positions in the excavation and drain cleaning services.

18 Local companies offering on the job training
Knife River Entry level positions that include laborers, office personnel, truck drivers, stick pickers, etc. This company really enjoys cross-training people. Employees work long hours during the summer months, but wages are high even for entry level positions. A beginning wage is usually around $18 per hour. As quoted by one of the supervisors, “If you loved playing in the sandbox with your Tonka trucks as a kid, you will probably love playing with the REAL trucks in the REAL sandbox as an adult!”

19 Local companies offering on the job training
Entek Is a bit like “Willy Wonka” but for the battery industry. This company located in Lebanon is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and installing of battery separators and extruders. Much of their technology is proprietary trade secrets specific to that industry. If you have an interest in welding, electrical, or machining, this might be a good match. They hire many people with little educational experience. Starting wages are $15.50.

Oregon Freeze Dry A company that manufactures freeze dried foods. You may have seen their products in sporting goods stores; Mountain House. This is another secretive company due to their proprietary trade secrets of the industry. Entry level positions pay $14.63 per hour. There is a basic math and writing test that is required for all jobs. There is often overtime and many avenues for advancement. Positions include areas of manufacturing, warehouse, and maintenance. This company offers a summer internship for students who are 16 or older. Woodcastle A high end furniture company that makes furniture from scratch! This is a small company with a huge heart. Their business model includes making sure all employees are offered fresh and healthy snacks free of charge with the goal in mind to teach healthy habits. Entry level wages are around minimum wage. If working with wood is of interest to you, than this would be a great match! There is a basic math test required during the interview.

21 Local companies offering on the job training
Linn Gear Co. Linn Gear manufactures gears and sprockets of many different sizes In fact, they manufacture 10,000 different products. They are hiring people with no experience but have some basic math skills, have a great attitude and excellent attendance. If you enjoy working with your hands, tools and machinery than this would be a great job for you! Mike’s Heating & Air A sheet metal company specializing in commercial and residential construction of HVAC systems. They hire entry level people to assist the journeyman. Employees who are hired enroll in an apprenticeship program at Chemeketa. Entry level wages are around $14 per hour. Journeyman wages range from $30-35 per hour.

22 Current and Future Construction Careers:
If you do find yourself curious about 4 year degree programs OSU offers Engineering degrees that allow you to jump into Project Engineering positions in a Construction Company. Click Logo to link to Engineering program website Construction Engineering Management (CEM) is a relatively unknown degree that has a 99% placement rate right out of college. They also have research programs that get you looking into the technological side of construction and what construction sites will look like in the future.

24 CTE Signing Day February 2018
Registration for CTE signing day will open in the Fall. If you are selected you are given a priority spot into the trade program you applied for. Some of these programs have a waiting list so it’s a big deal if you are selected!
