DEFINITION OF TERMS Subsistence Farming: Planting a variety of crops on a small scale usually for the family. Slash and Burn Agriculture: Clearing the land for planting by cutting and burning trees and branches and mixed the ashes with urine for fertilizer.

FARMING POTTERY MAKING They cultivated maize, manioc (which is cassava), sweet potatoes, hot pepper, cotton, tobacco, guava and pineapple. They also hunted the Coney and iguanas. This was done using clay and the Tainos were called ceramic people as they were excellent at pottery making. OIL MINING

TRADING FOOD PACKAGING BANKING The Tainos exchanged a lot of goods from island to island. Goods such as carved stone, stools, manioc and pepper.

Ways in which the Taino Depended on the Natural Environment
They made use of the following for survival: Rivers – for fishing and domestic uses such as washing, cooking, cleaning and so on. Sea- for transportation between the islands and fishing. Trees – make canoe, houses, utensils, zemi and weapons. Cotton- used to make cloth, hammock, zemi.

Shells and beads- used to make ornaments. Seeds – used to make ornaments. Gold- used to make ornaments. Stone- used for carvings, stools, weapons and to make zemi. Fruits- to make jam and sauce. Food- such as cassava, pepper, sweet potatoes.
