It is a form of illegal hunting

Current population statistics for Rhinos
1970- population dropped dramatically decreased 65,000 rhinos missing from population ***that’s half the worlds population of rhinos*** Today- fewer than 2,500 left

Current population statistics for elaphants
there were between 5 and 10 million Elaphants Turn of the century- 200,000 elephants Today- no more than 35,000 to 40,000 left in the wild

Reasons for Rhino Poaching
"De-horning" Hunters sell horns to countries in Asia Some doctors believe that the horn has healing powers Profit made $300,000 on the black market They have been declared more valuable than gold

Reasons for Elephant poaching
Elephant tusks are wanted because they are made of ivory Used for jewelry and ornaments China is a large consumer of elephant tusks Profit made $1,500 on the black market

Decline in tourism (second most important factor in ecomomy) If tourism decreases economy decreases

Steps Taken to Stop Poaching
Anti-poaching dogs and rangers Drones to track elephants and rhinos- drones cost $50,000-$70,000 and battery life isn't that long Protected animal reserves Increase penalty on illegal poaching Thermal cameras
