2 Independent Clause - Marge Simpson
Marge is an independent woman. She can survive on her own.

3 Independent (Marge) Clause
Just like Marge, an independent clause can survive on its own. It is a complete sentence which expresses a complete thought. Subject + Verb + Complete Thought.

4 Examples of Independent (Marge) Clauses
Bart does not like to go to school. Lisa loves the saxophone.

5 Write your own independent clause about your principal.

6 Compound Sentence (Independent Clause + Comma + FANBOY + Independent Clause)

9 Dependent Clauses (Homer)
Homer can’t function when he is on his own. Without Marge helping him, things go wrong. He is DEPENDENT on Marge and cannot survive without her.

10 Dependent (Homer) Clauses
Just like Homer, a dependent clause cannot survive by itself. It does not express a complete thought. IT IS NOT A SENTENCE.

11 Examples of Dependent (Homer) Clauses
Until the next time I see him When I ran to the yellow house Although I want to get an A in math

12 “A WHITE BUS” Words Dependent clauses also begin with signal words. We will call these “A WHITE BUS” words because they signal the beginning of a Homer clause. A WHITE BUS words are also known as subordinating conjunctions.

13 Common Dependent Clause “A WHITE BUS”
A: after, although, as Wh: when, while, whenever, wherever, whether I: in case, if T: though E: even though, even if B: before, because U: until, unless S: since, so (that)

14 Your Turn: Now pick out 3 different A WHITE BUS words and write 3 different dependent clauses. (Remember, Homer is not complete!)

15 A Rule To Know! A dependent clause (Homer) must have an independent clause (Marge) by it to be a complete sentence.

Simple Sentences (Marge) Compound Sentences (Marge, + FANBOYS +Marge) Complex (Homer, + Marge OR Marge + Homer)

17 Simple Sentences (Marge) Subject + Verb
Homer sleeps too much. Bart is cool. Lisa will want to get a dog.

18 Homer was a nobody until he met Marge.
Complex Sentences Marge (I.C.) + Homer (D.C.) Homer was a nobody until he met Marge. Homer(D.C.), + Marge (I.C.) Until Homer met Marge, he was a nobody.
