2 Scientific Notation is:
Written as a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. Multiplied by a power of 10. For example: x or 5.8 x 10-4 Used to write VERY large numbers and VERY small numbers

3 Large numbers are written with a positive power of 10
3.56 x 108 is scientific notation for 356,000,000

4 Small numbers are written with a negative power of 10
5.8 x is scientific notation for

5 Why is 12.3 x 103 not scientific notation?
(12.3 is not a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10)

6 Steps to writing a number in scientific notation
Move the decimal so that it represents a number between one and ten (1 could be used too) Show multiplication (X) Multiply that number by a power of ten. The exponent will be the number of times you had to move the decimal.

8 Write each number in standard notation
