Jesus' words (almost) “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my car, the car you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” Jn 17:24 Paul: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the car that is to be revealed to us.” Ro 8:18

Jesus' words ... “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” Jn 17:24 Paul: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Ro 8:18

What does 'Glory' mean nowadays?
What is 'Glory'??? "That is glorious" these days, means: It's really pretty...
9
But what is this 'glory'? Hebrew kāḇôḏ, from a root signifying ‘weight’, 'wealth', 'riches' Greek doxa, from 'opinion' or 'reputation'. Excellence and praiseworthiness Honour and adoration expressed in response 'doxology' = giving glory to God Both can be translated: reputation, splendour, honour.

OT Glory: The Glory Cloud
Ex 16:6-10 Israelites grumbling about food... While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud. Ex 40:34 Desert tabernacle dedicated... Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

OT Glory: The Glory Cloud
2 Chron 7:1-3 Solomon's Temple dedicated... When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. 2 The priests could not enter the temple of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled it. 3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, “He is good; his love endures forever.”

OT Glory: Creation Ps 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
14
OT Glory: Creation Ps 8:1-6
1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. . . . 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? 5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet:
15
Let's read John 17:1-5 1 “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
16
We learn that... Glory flows both ways: Jesus' glory: past and future
The Father glorifies the Son The Son glorifies the Father Jesus' glory: past and future he had already glorified God by his works/actions was about to glorify God by his willing death Heb 2:9 "now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death..."
17
Let's read John 17:20-24 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
18
Astonishing! Jesus has given us glory! (v22) Why? (v23)
the glory that he was given by the Father Why? (v23) so we can be one so the world will see that Jesus was sent by the Father so the world will see that we are loved by the Father and it flows both ways! "glory has come to me through them" Jn 17:10
19
What does this mean for us?
God's intention is for creation to return glory to him: when our lives show the attributes of God others see the glory of God's presence in us Westminster Catechism: "Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him for ever..." How can we do this? by obeying God by proclaiming his glory/reputation by words and deeds being one (loving one another, serving one another, praising one another, honouring one another)
20
We are 'glory mirrors'... And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Cor 3:18 glory = reputation
21
Glory -> reputation
My reputation? Your reputation?
