Who came and why did they come?

2 Words to Know: persecution noun - unfair treatment or punishment
famine noun – a serious lack of food migrate verb – to move from one country to another immigrant noun – someone who migrates tenement noun - a poorly built apartment building

3 Between 1840 and 1930, a total of 37 million people decided to immigrate to the United States.

4 Why did they come? Mostly economic reasons (Eastern Europeans, Mexicans and Chinese)

5 Why else did the come? Political upheaval, especially wars, and religious persecution (German Jews, Pols, Hungarians and Turks)

6 Any other reasons? Famine, especially in Ireland, because of the Potato Famine

7 Last and worst reason: Forced migration (African Slaves)
Outlawed in 1808
