Who came and why did they come?

Words to Know: persecution noun - unfair treatment or punishment
famine noun – a serious lack of food migrate verb – to move from one country to another immigrant noun – someone who migrates tenement noun - a poorly built apartment building

Between 1840 and 1930, a total of 37 million people decided to immigrate to the United States.

Why did they come? Mostly economic reasons (Eastern Europeans, Mexicans and Chinese)

Why else did the come? Political upheaval, especially wars, and religious persecution (German Jews, Pols, Hungarians and Turks)

Any other reasons? Famine, especially in Ireland, because of the Potato Famine

Last and worst reason: Forced migration (African Slaves)
