Let me share with you some interesting research on the intersection of play and formative assessment and how much we can learn about student learning through digital games. The Melinda & Bill Gates Foundation funded a study out of the University of Michigan and NYU called A-GAMES - Analyzing Games for Assessment in Math, ELA/SS, and Science. It explored how teachers actually use video games in their teaching to support formative assessment. Nearly 500 teachers participated in the study. @KariStubbs #AGAMES #21CLHK

The results were quite interesting! First - it is important to note digital game use can improve how teachers conduct formative assessment – from frequency to checking for things like motivation and engagement. The survey showed that 91.7% of teachers who use digital games for formative assessment on a daily basis actually provide that feedback back to students on a daily basis. @KariStubbs #AGAMES #21CLHK

Also, teachers are more likely to find alternative instructional strategies when they use games as a vehicle for formative assessment. Did you know that teachers who use games more regularly also use games to hit a wider range of objectives (teaching core and supplemental content, assessing students)? @KariStubbs #AGAMES #21CLHK

And, interestingly, teachers who use digital games are more likely to communicate confidence and success regarding their own formative assessment practices than non-game using teachers. <see if I can pull out a specific example from the full report> @KariStubbs #AGAMES #21CLHK
