1 Utilizing ArcScene to Visualize Catch Basin Contributing Areas
Kentucky GIS Conference Presented by: Gary Coates GIS Project Specialist – Spatial Data Integrations Friday September 28, 2012

2 Elevation Data Contours Mass Points LIDAR DEM DSM TIN

3 Data Conversion and Storage
Process available elevation data as necessary into usable or desired format Decide where and how data will be stored

4 Convert LAS to Multipoint
Requires 3D Analyst Extension

5 Base Data Storage File Geodatabase Feature Dataset
Over 760 million points in this dataset

6 Terrain Dataset The ability to store and manage vector-based terrain information in the geodatabase. Support for a variety of data types such as points, multipoints, polylines, and polygons. These can represent all the features commonly used for topographic mapping. Examples include mass points, spot heights, water body shorelines, rivers, culverts, and roads. Scalable and seamless. Collections can reach into the billions of points. Can be modified over time. Data thinning tools to eliminate irrelevant or redundant samples.

7 Terrain To… Convert Terrain to TIN or Raster
Can be created for entire dataset or selected project area

8 Terrain to Raster Make sure to use Environments… button to set processing extent Do not use clip polygon when building Terrain

9

10 Common Elevation Data Errors
Mis-Matched contour lines

11 Common Elevation Data Errors
Road/Rail crossings not removed from base elevation before processing

12 Live ArcScene Demo
