1 The political spectrum
Making sense of your hidden agenda.

2 Objectives Be able to define major political ideologies including:
Location on the political spectrum Relative level of government involvement Associated ideas/theories Identify potential allies and adversaries for each hidden agenda. Caveat: This is a broad level overview that is meant to REVIEW Socials 9 and PREVIEW experiences with Civic Mirror and content of Socials 11.

3 Political Spectrum: Warming Up
The logos below represent most of the main-stream political parties in Canada from the past and the present. What does each party “stand for”? What issues do they support? What does each party oppose? What are they against? Who might the NDP work with? Who might the Conservatives work with? Use this as a warm up- I wouldn’t get too technical on all the answers, as the point is to get students thinking and see existing knowledge. As a cheat sheet- the parties appear in basic order of left to right on the spectrum. The BQ is a bit of an anomaly as they have their one dedicated policy issue of sovereignty. As we are starting with political parties- as this is the branded mechanism students would be seeing ideologies- it is important to distinguish parties (organisations vying for political power) with ideologies (the philosophies guiding specific policy decisions by parties/governments) Quick Check: Party vs. Ideology

4 The Political Spectrum: Theory
Preview the spectrums- multidimensional followed by a simplified left/right.

5 The Political Spectrum: Theory
When we categorise a political party, or try to figure out our own personal politics, what kinds of issues would we think about? Economic Taxes. How much? Paid by whom? Programs. What does the government pay for? Wages. Is there a minimum? Is there a maximum? Organization. Who controls the market? Political Government size. Is more or less government better?** Rules. What rules exist? For whom? Justice. How are people rewarded and punished for their behaviour? Power. Who has it? Who doesn’t? Social Religion. Desired? Encouraged? Language. Restricted? Official? Rights. Are some people “better” than others?**

6 The Political Spectrum: Theory
Compilation of simplified left/right with specific ideology pieces and ideologies.

8 The Political Spectrum: Theory + Hidden Agendas

9 Prep: The Political Spectrum: + You x 2
Go to Take the test ONCE as you, yourself. YOU. Take the test AGAIN as your hidden agenda. In both cases, print the certificate at the end and bring them to next class. You should identify which is you and which is your hidden agenda. Be sure to keep this private.

10 Environmentalist Capitalist Socialist Liberal
Print these and cut up… these are what students should “post” on to slide 7… i.e. with magnet, tape, etc.
