2. Problem & Goal Statement
The issue at hand here is Detroit Metro’s poverty and average income rate is steadily worsening. As these rates worsen the number of homeowner’s are decreasing and the number of homeless people are increasing. Our goal as a team is to provide these people with a cost-effective community for which they can call home. Another goal of Steel City is to reintegrate these people as contributing members to society.

11. Volunteer/ Educational Opportunities
Have the citizens of Detroit send all recyclables to steel city for the homeless to separate and organize.
Pick up trash along streets and communities.
Landscaping for the local citizens of Detroit.
Residents can learn hands-on skills working in the community garden.

12. Re-Establishment in Society
Our counselor volunteers will meet with anyone who would like to set up appointments.
Counselors will discuss things such as: money management, personal hygiene, people skills, organization, employability.
Further progressing clients will be taught things such as interview skills, critical thinking, professionalism.

13. Job Finding
We will have newspapers delivered weekly, with classified ads and Job posting.
There will be a phone in our main office to contact potential employers and set up interviews.
Volunteers will provide transportation to and from bus stations daily.

14. Help From the Homeless
How can the homeless help Local Citizens in Detroit?
Residents will be encouraged to participate actively in a community based program named: “Hopeful Hero’s.”
Hopeful Hero’s is similar to the renowned “Community Watch” program.
Participants in Hopeful Hero’s will be given the duty to help police and citizens to “clean up” the streets of Detroit.
They will be asked to keep an eye on community activity, report crimes, public hazards, and assist citizens in whatever way they can.

15. Main Idea Many homeless feel rejected and unaccepted by the public.
This is because many people have a negative stereotype of the homeless as a burden.
The idea is, if we can have the homeless contribute to building a better community and helping alongside citizens to do so, there will be a change in attitude of the public towards the homeless.
With this, we hope our residents will be praised and thanked in order to make them feel more accepted to get them closer to establishing themselves in society.

18. Conclusion
In conclusion, Detroit faces a major issue with poverty and there’s an increasing number of people living on the streets. As a group, we have defined the problem and used the engineering design process to reconstruct an entire community for the homeless to inhabit. This process is designed for each individual to find hope in themselves and the supporting members around to push them back on their feet into the working environment. We have realized that this would not be an easy or cheap process but we tried to simplify the community for basic necessities to keep the cost down. At the same time, we wanted to get the most out of our designs and have the residents get the most out of their stay.
