Today I will: learn the structure and purpose of a news release. So I can: understand the role a news release plays as a public relations strategy. I will know I’m successful when: I am able to write an effective news release Text Books today. No initial reading. Will use as reference during assignment.

What is a news release? An announcement that is sent by a business or organization to media outlets. The main goal? To develop positive perception or awareness. What is the purpose of a news release? To announce newsworthy developments about a company to the public. If done correctly, a news agency (TV/radio station, etc.) will run a story about your company.

Client & Target Market: Energy Candy Bar, world’s youth, Product Name & Tag line: Task #1: Write a news release announcing the release of this new product. Use example from the text book on page 398 as a guide. Take the name of the company and the tag line chosen to create this news release. It will be sent to industry publications, newspapers, television & radio stations and web sites. The more detail and interesting information you’re able to provide, the more successful your client will be in generating interest for this new product. Task #2: Determine a list of three specific media outlets and the contact information it will be sent to. Make logical choices (connect to target market) For each write out why this choice was made. The goal: To cause the media outlet to produce a story and gain “free” advertising for this new energy candy bar. Details: This is an individual assignment. It must be typed and maximum of 1 page ed to Zender arriving Tuesday, 10/24 at the end of the period. 10 points.

4 Writing a News Release 1 – First paragraph should answer the Who, What, When, Where and Why questions 2 – The story with important facts should be developed within the next few paragraphs 3 – When first identifying people in a news release, include the full name and title or position of the person, but avoid using Mr., Ms, Mrs., Dr., etc. After you have used the complete name refer only to the last name in the remaining part of the news. 4 – More information that is slightly less important can follow 5 – The entire news release should be brief – usually one or two pages is enough. If the news release runs more than one page write “more” at the bottom of each page except the final one. Identify and number each succeeding page at the top. On the last page, put “###” to signify the end of the news release. 6 – The news release should always include the name, address, phone number and address of the contact person sending out the release. All pages should numbered except for the first page.
