3 Measurement Definition Units Instrument Used to Measure Mass Amount of matter in a substance g, kg, mg 1 kg = 1000 g 1 g = 1000 mg Balance (units = g). Must tare (set to 0.0g) to only obtain mass of the substance. Volume Amount of space a substance occupies. cm3, mL, L cm3 = mL 1L = 1000mL For containers, use a ruler (V = lwh). For irregularly shaped objects, use the displacement of water (change in volume when object fully submerged). Density Amount of matter per unit of volume. g/mL = g/cm3 Calculated with: D = mass ÷ volume **Density of water is 1.00g/mL**

5 Objects that are less dense will float/rise up
Ice in water Oil on water Helium balloon in air Objects that are more dense will sink/fall down Rocks in water Natural gas in air Calculating density: Since density is the amount of matter per unit of volume, it can be calculated using the following formula:

6 Examples An object has a mass of 1.17kg and occupies 150cm3 of space. Calculate its density. Mr. Brown has 75mL of a beverage that has a density of 13g/mL. Calculate its mass. Mrs. Brown has 3kg of candy for her class. She knows that the density of the candy is 12g/cm3 (don’t ask how), but the package is irregularly shaped and she wants to calculate its volume. Help her out!
