Chemistry –Pure substances
Grade 9
3
Made up of ONE TYPE of particle.
Elements Made up of ONE TYPE of particle.
4
Periodic Table All elements are found arranged on the Periodic Table.
There are between naturally occurring elements.
5
Classification of the Elements
Three Major Groups Metals Non-Metals Metalloids What do you notice? Most of the elements are metals and are found on the left side of the periodic table
6
Are all Solids at room temperature except Mercury which is a liquid.
Properties of metals Are all Solids at room temperature except Mercury which is a liquid.
7
Properties of Non Metals
Most are either gases or solids. One exception is Bromine which is a liquid.
8
Properties of the Metalloids
Metalloids have properties in-between metals and non-metals. They Sit on what looks like a “staircase” on the periodic table.
9
Compounds Are Pure Substances made up of two or more different types of particles in a definite ratio Example Water is made of the elements Hydrogen and Oxygen combined together in the ratio of 1 part Oxygen, 2 parts Hydrogen. Compounds are represented by a formula such as H2O.
10
This diagram represent the compound
Copper carbonate. Copper carbonate is made up of 4 different elements Copper – 1 atom Carbon - 1 atom Oxygen - 3 atoms The formula is written CuCO3
11
Copper sulfate = 1 atom of copper 1 atom sulfur 4 atoms of oxygen
Formula = Cu SO4 O Cu O S O O
12
H2 O What does this mean? Symbol for the element Oxygen.
Symbol for the element Hydrogen H2 O The small number here means there are 2 atoms of Hydrogen No small number here means there 1 atom of Oxygen
13
Rules Metal goes first in the compound if it is present.
Hydrogen goes first if there is no metal CuSO4 H2O
