1. National Assembly
Who were they? Group of people from the 3rd estate who wanted reforms! (changes)!
What was their goal? To make the 3rd estate equal to the 1st and 2nd estates + spread more rights and freedoms / reforms.

3. Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity!
Declaration of the Rights of Man (did not apply to woman…could you tell?)
Written by 3rd Estate in 1789 (National Assembly)
Purpose: to state the rights of French citizens and create a foundation for a new French government.
Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity!
San-culottes: 3rd Estate members who wore full length pants (which is not what nobles wore!). They supported the revolution.

4. Declaration of the Rights of Man
Influenced by:
The ideas of Enlightenment and the American Declaration of Independence.
Main Ideas:
People are the foundation of government
Government MUST protect the rights of the people
Some of these rights included:
Innocent until proven guilty
Freedom of speech and press
Taxation according to people’s ability to pay

5. National Assembly’s Reforms (1790)
The National Assembly fought for the following changes:
“Old Regime” or Estates System was abolished!!
The Clergy lost their land their political power.
France’s government became a CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY!!!!!
A governing body called the Legislative Assembly was formed.

6. King & Queen try to Escape (1791)
After all this, Louis XVI figured that this revolution was for real and that his family was in danger!!!
He made a plan for them all to escape to Austria.
However, as they neared the French border a postman recognized him and they were all forced to return back to Paris!
A lot of citizens got mad that he tried to escape!

7. Divisions in French Society
Despite the new government, food shortage and government debt remained.
The Legislative Assembly split into three groups:
1) Radicals, 2) Moderates, and 3) Conservatives.
This made change difficult because France was split.
